Keeping Your Routine Fresh

Variety is the spice of life. Have you been doing the same workouts over and over again? Experts agree that we should constantly change what we are doing to stay in shape for many reasons.

You are more likely to enjoy your exercise if you modify your routine, which could lead to higher compliance and longevity. If you really like doing one type of exercise, that’s great, but try to combine what you are doing with something different. For instance, if you are a runner, perhaps adding some weight training twice a week would help you reduce burn out. How about running sideways, grapevine stepping or backwards? These changes not only challenge your body, but your mind too. Just be careful and start slowly to avoid injuries.

If you typically enjoy cardiovascular exercise, consider some type of resistance training. It really doesn’t matter how you do it. For instance, some people enjoy going to the gym for traditional weight lifting. Others simply use resistive bands or their own body weight to build strength. It’s amazing what you can do with home equipment and some ingenuity.

There are a lot of ways to vary a routine. Reducing the rest time between sets. Increasing the number of repetitions and reducing the weight load, or vice versa. How about reducing the weight considerably and doing it with only one arm or one leg?  Some may enjoy slight modifications in body position to make the exercise more challenging. Try standing on an uneven surface like two pillows or a Bosu® ball. Have you ever tried a one legged pushup?

The type of exercise you do is certain to improve your everyday lifestyle as you become more fit. Varying what you do will help to keep you motivated and enjoying your workouts. The more ways you challenge your body, the less likely you are to become injured. However, if you should hurt yourself I’m here in Lowry to help you get back to your workouts as soon as possible.
